Editorial: Water rights not a simple issue in Texas

By:  Kelley Holcomb, general manager of the Angelina & Neches River Authority.

Having been blessed to live here in the piney woods of East Texas, we have also been blessed with an abundance of natural resources. The recent boom in natural gas exploration is just one facet in a long history of replenishable commodities that have sustained the local economy.

While water is one of the most abundant and prolific natural resources that we enjoy and often take for granted, it’s also one of the most difficult commodities to forecast and one where history will be made in the future. With the drought of 2011 behind us and the winter rains of 2012 in front of us, we have to ask ourselves one question: What does the future hold?
