Bulverde Residents Fighting Water Rate Increase

From the San Antonio Express News

Water bills in a South Texas town could soon double, and that could potentially lead to rising water prices for everyone. Several homeowners in Bulverde are fighting a proposed rate hike that would increase water bills up to 100 percent.

When looking at the numbers, the Southwest Water Company says — in essence — it’s providing a full glass of water for what it costs them to supply half of that. Many in Bulverde say their water company is leaving them high and dry. "I don't think it's fair," said Don Klemcke. Klemcke’s water bill could soon double, and he’s not alone.

Southwest Water asked the city council to approve a 100 percent rate increase. The company says customers haven’t had a rate increase in seven years, even though the cost to supply water has gone up. "That's a huge increase,” resident John Nowak said. The city said no way and hopes the state will do the same. "The city will also send a message to TCEQ that we object to the proposed rate increase," Nowak said.

Mark Mott says if the rate hike goes through, he’ll build a well. "We can't see getting ramrodded by any utility company, forcing us to pay unreasonable prices for our water,” Mott said. But most don’t have that option. "The company has got sort of a monopoly going on. We're at their mercy if you will,” Klemcke said.

Which is why many are hoping this push for a rate increase will soon dry up.
The Southwest Water Company has filed an appeal with the state, although it’s unclear when the state will make its decision.
